  • Verghese Kurien

Considered the father of the "White Revolution" and the "Milkman of India", Verghese Kurien has transformed dairy into one of India's key exports. In his early life, he studied in various institutions, including the College of Engineering, Chennai and Michigan State University, US.

He pioneered the Anand and Amul model cooperatives making India the world's largest milk producer. In this model, consumers paid 70% - 80% of the price in cash to dairy farmers who control the marketing.

In 30 years, his model quadrupled India's milk production, which has made him one of the top 10 Indian engineers of all time.  

  • Sundar Pichai

Known to all as Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai is the current CEO of Alphabet Inc - Google's parent company. He was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and studied at The Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur and later at Stanford in Material Sciences and Engineering for his postgraduate degree. 

He is one of the most famous engineers in India. Pichai has worked on optimising google's search bar, and it was his idea for Google to have a separate browser. His other vital contributions are the development of Gmail, google drive as a successful cloud application, Maps, and other Android applications.

  • Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (APJ Abdul Kalam)

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was also The 11th president of India and is most popularly known as the Missile Man of India. He graduated from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960. Postgraduation, he joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) as a scientist.

He played a crucial role in developing ballistic missiles and launch vehicle tech and was a part of India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. He also designed the first indigenous hovercraft. His most notable accomplishment, however, was his pivotal role in India's first satellite launch. He is known as one of the top Indian engineers in the world, and rightfully so.

  • Satish Dhawan

Satish Dhawan is also known as the father of fluid dynamics research. He was the third chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1972 and is known for orchestrating India's independent space programme.

Dhawan has an engineering background in Mechanical engineering and a master's degree in Arts in English Literature. He later got his aeronautical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology. However, his educational qualifications continue beyond there. He also has a double PhD in mathematics and aerospace engineering.

His key accomplishments and contributions were mastering remote sensing and satellite communications in India. So that would include systems like IRS (a remote sensing satellite), INSAT (a telecom satellite) and PSLV (Polar satellite launch vehicle). These put India on the map of the list of nations aspiring to master space exploration. He is considered the best engineer in India.

  • Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

Known as India's most prolific engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya studied civil engineering as his undergraduate in Pune and began his career as an assistant engineer in the Public Works Department of the Government of Bombay. He spearheaded several projects in Odisha, Hyderabad and multiple places in Maharashtra.

His most well-known accomplishments include implementing anti-flood measures in Hyderabad and a block irrigation system in the Deccan canals in 1899. Later in 1903, he received the Bharat Ratna for his work on the automatic water floodgates in the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune.

He is considered one of the key architects of the Indian economy, making him one of the top 10 Indian engineers of all time. 

  • E. Sreedharan

Sreedharan is most popularly known as India's Metro Man. He is a retired Indian Engineering Service (IES) officer who has contributed significantly to India's public transport system. 

His key projects were the Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro, for which he received the Padma Shri Medal in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan Award in 2008. He was also awarded the Medal of Honour in France.

  • Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawala was the first Indian woman to go to space. She earned her Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College. After which, he pursued her doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado. 

In November 1997, on her first space journey, she boarded the STS-87 space shuttle at Columbia. Her second flight in 2003 was also a success. However, it also, unfortunately, ended in the death of her and her crew members.

She's a notable cultural and historic figure in India for her accomplishments and remains an inspiration to young women worldwide.

  • Satya Nadella

The current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, was born in Hyderabad, Telangana. He is mainly responsible for Microsoft moving into cloud computing and the company's second coming. He is one of the great engineers of India. Under his leadership, Microsoft has built one of the largest cloud computing infrastructures in the world. 

He pursued an electrical engineering degree for his bachelor's and later pursued an MS in computer science at the University of Wisconsin. His most well-known contributions included helping launch Microsoft's databases, the Windows Server, and developer tools in the Azure cloud.

  • Vinod Dham

He is the father of the Pentium microprocessor chip. He is also the co-inventor of flash memory technology, popularly known as the SD card. A piece of tech widely employed in several devices like USB drives, mobile phones, digital cameras, etc. 

He is the Vice President of the Microprocessor Group at Intel Co. Some of his other inventions include AMD K6 - known as the "Pentium Killer". He is also one of the first co-inventors of Intel's Flash Memory Technology (ETOX). 

  • Chandra Kumar Naranbhai Patel

An electrical engineer, Chandra Kumar Naranbhai Patel, is popularly known as the inventor of the carbon dioxide laser. His contributions have helped tremendously in the industrial fields, as his laser is still used in cutting and welding processes. 

 It's also used in fields like medicine - In surgeries, as a scalpel, and for cosmetic procedures to resurface the skin. Currently, he holds a total of 36 patents relating to lasers.
