How is CAT Percentile Calculated?
The CAT percentile calculation includes three steps:
If you do not already know, CAT exam patterns have negative markings. For each correct answer, the candidate gets three marks. On the other hand, one mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. However, wrong answers in non-MCQ-type questions do not draw any deduction of marks.
Now, let us understand the CAT percentile calculation -
- A candidate’s score is evaluated section-wise.
- The total score is a summation of all section-wise scores, and this total score determines the CAT ranking.
- The total score is normalised to arrive at a scaled CAT score.
- The CAT scores are converted into percentiles and reported on the CAT scorecard.
The formula is -
CAT Percentile= [1- (Rank in CAT exam/ Total no. of candidates)] * 100
Here is an example to help you understand the calculation better.
Suppose Tushar ranked 3000 among the total of 200,000 candidates who took the CAT exam. To calculate Tushar’s percentile,
CAT percentile of Tushar= [1- (3000/ 200,000)] * 100
The result is 98.5.
This means that 98.5% of the total candidates have their scores below Tushar or, in other words, 1.5% of total appearing candidates scored more than Tushar. We should also mention that the percentile scores are rounded off up to two decimal points. The greater the percentile, the higher the chances of selection.
[Note: All CAT percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99, and so on.]
CAT Cutoff 2023
CAT Cutoff is the minimum marks required for selection. The cutoff process is not exclusive to CAT exams but all MBA entrance exams. The cutoff mark is calculated after considering a few factors. These factors include the question paper’s difficulty level, the number of candidates appearing for the CAT exam, seat intake, previous year's CAT cutoffs, etc. Easier papers get higher cutoff scores and vice versa.\
