Top Entrance Exams for Getting into Engineering Institutes in India

• JEE Main

JEE Main, administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is a nationwide engineering entrance exam conducted twice yearly in January and April. Candidates prepare for JEE Main to get admission into some of the most reputed colleges in India. 

Institutions such as the National Institute of Technology (NIT), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and many others are among these colleges. 

This online exam is conducted over a duration of 3 hours and contains Multiple Choice and numerical questions on Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.

• JEE Advanced

If you clear JEE Main successfully and are placed in the first 2.5 lakh ranks, you will be eligible for the JEE Advanced, a much more complicated and challenging engineering examination conducted only once a year.

The JEE Advanced is a computer-based test with a three-hour time limit for each subject – Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. The grading system for the paper is also quite strict – while each right answer carries 3 marks, each wrong answer results in the deduction of one mark.

• WBJEE

Some engineering entrance exams in India are conducted by specific states in India. The WBJEE, or West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, is one such exam held by the state of West Bengal that grants students admission to private and Government engineering colleges. This entrance test is conducted in the offline format and comprises two papers in all, with Mathematics being paper 1 (for 100 marks) and Chemistry and Physics being paper 2 (for 50 marks each).

• KCET

The KCET, or Karnataka Common Entrance Test, is yet another one of the state-specific engineering entrance exams held by the state of Karnataka. This exam enables students to be admitted to engineering colleges for professional courses like B. E (Bachelor of Engineering) and B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology).

There are three papers, namely Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and candidates should have scored at least 45% marks in Mathematics and Physics apart from biology/biotechnology/chemistry or electronics/computer science to be eligible for this entrance exam. Each right answer in the paper will be awarded one mark, and there are no negative markings for wrong answers.

• MHT-CET

Structured to admit students into pharmacy and engineering courses, the Maharashtra Health and Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) conducted by the Maharashtra government is an online test worth 50 marks per paper and with a duration of 1 hour, 30 minutes. There are two combinations for the paper, depending on which branch you choose.

While engineering aspirants need to opt for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics paper, pharmacy aspirants between Biology or Mathematics. Every right answer in the Mathematics paper is for 2 marks, while the right answers for the other papers carry 1 mark each.

• GUJCET

The GUJCET, or Gujarat Common Entrance Test, conducted by the state of Gujarat, is a 3-hour offline common engineering entrance exam for aspirants wanting to pursue Pharmacy or Engineering. There are two sections for the whole test – the first comprises Chemistry and Physics, while the second is dedicated to Mathematics.

Both sections come to 120 markers; this exam includes negative markings for wrong answers. So, each right answer gets 1 mark, while 0.25 units are marked down for each wrong answer.

• UPSEE

In Uttar Pradesh, the Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) conducts the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam (UPSEE) for students seeking admission in professional engineering courses, etc. The examination comprises an offline paper test of 600 marks that must be attempted within 3 hours. 

Section 1 of the paper comprises Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, while Section 2 contains Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Each correct answer earns the aspirant 4 marks.

• COMEDK

The state of Karnataka administers the Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) undergraduate entrance exam for students seeking admission in architecture and engineering. The COMEDK UGET can help engineering aspirants get admission into one of the state's 190 unaided private engineering colleges.

The computer-based online test consists of 180 questions, each with one mark. Students must attempt all the questions related to Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in English and complete the paper within 3 hours.

• BITSAT

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test or BITSAT is an online entrance exam administered by the Birla Institute of Technology, and if the student is eligible for admission, they can be enrolled at the BITS campus in Pilani, Goa, or Hyderabad.

With 3 hours to go, students must attempt the paper in English for 450 marks spread out across the following sections – Physics, Chemistry, English Proficiency, Logical Reasoning, Mathematics/ Biology. While every right answer is for 3 marks, each wrong answer will be marked down by 1 unit.

• EAMCET

The EAMCET, or Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test, is a 3-hour test conducted across the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for aspirants who want admission into private and government medical, agricultural, or engineering colleges in these two states. 

The examination in Telangana is conducted online by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad on behalf of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), while the examination for Andhra Pradesh is conducted by JNTU Anantapur on behalf of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). Aspirants are given 1 mark for every correct answer for 160 Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry questions.
